What a blessing to be able to help Gary and Lily Melton minister to the folks in the area.

Thanksgiving day we spent with our daughter Karen and her husband Cecil in West Columbia along with, grandson Tim and the two greats, Carson and Bella. Also our daughter Hope, her husband Justin and Little Walker. Cecil's parents Cecil and Jean were also there along with his brother Craig and his wife

Hope and Walker spent part of Friday and Saturday here in Saluda with us while Justin went to the Carlina Clemson game. That made a great Thanksgiving for us, just wish that our other children, Preston and Pam with their families could have joined in.

Oh well, Christmas is just around the corner and looking forward to another time with the family.Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-3235842654603624322010-10-24T03:51:00.000-07:002010-10-24T03:53:52.087-07:00THE SHEPHERDS HANDSPlease keep us with us at, www. theshepherdshandsMayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-33010247029061013392010-09-25T02:56:00.000-07:002010-09-25T03:08:34.132-07:00HOME AT LASTSo good to be home, don't ever remember home looking so good, even the brown grass looked beautiful. Now for the catching up while we were away, grass to be cut, attempts to try and bring back some of our trees and shrubs, looks like we've lost some. If we could have brought back some of the rain we had while we were on vacation things would be different.

This trip was the least enjoyed that we've taken, of course a lot had to do with our being sick most of the time. I should have taken Marianne's advise when we were in New York and returned home.

Hopefully when I get my strength back and get in the mood I will post some pictures for you to see. Right now just looking to get back in the saddle again. Thanks for your continued prayers.Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-39516286886891620802010-09-21T11:58:00.000-07:002010-09-22T03:36:55.301-07:00ON THE ROADWe didn't get to leave the parking lot at Wal-Mart because of the traffic backup on I-83 so we spent the night along with 14 others. We traveled early this morning to Lancaster to attend the Sights and Sound production of Joseph.

Prior to attending the performance we enjoyed lunch (As always) at Good and Plenty Restaurant. Believe me it was the best meal I enjoyed on the whole trip. Yes, I did the unpardonable,I had fried chicken. (Saved a piece for later too) Will have to eat rabbit food the rest of the trip.

Enjoyed the performance of Joseph tonight, I believe we have now seen five different performances at Sights and Sound, have enjoyed them all.

After a nights rest we will be heading out shortly for home. This will be out last post until we bring you up to date after arriving home on Thursday. Seems like we have been gone three months. Looking forward to seeing out friends and neighbors.Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-58040541407691441622010-09-20T15:19:00.000-07:002010-09-20T15:21:17.882-07:00ON THE ROADJust a note to let you know all is well, we are in the Starbucks parking lot in Wilkes-Barre, PA. We visited several other sights of interest and then out to a fishing village to look around, there we found numerous restaurants but left to go to Halifax and tour some sights to down town.

We then traveled to Peggy’s Cove a very interesting sight with the lighthouse and the bay we took a different way back to the MH as the GPS lead us on the wrong route out to the cove. I believe the GPS has been our worst enemy as well as a very helpful item several times.

Since I still am having tire problems after we visit Laurinburg in the morning we will again be looking for a tire dealer.

Day 11
Waking up to rain I went to McDonald’s for some Hot Cakes which we ate in the MH with Turkey Bacon and Coffee. Afterwards I drove to the tire center doors at Wal-Mart and got air for my tire and proceeded to Folksville, NS. After driving an hour we realized the dependable GPS had once again played another trick on us. I had enough, the wrong direction, the rain; I decided it was time to head home.

Along the way plans were changed and we went further north and came in at on I-95 at Houlton, ME and are staying at, “My Brother’s Place" Campground. Tomorrow we will visit, Presque Isle, Me, and the largest covered bridge in the world in Hartland, CA, and other scenic sights.Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-37260079921973426382010-09-14T17:34:00.000-07:002010-09-14T18:12:44.913-07:00ON THE ROADDay 8

Today we traveled on the Cabot Trail which took ten hours and 15 minutes. We sure were give out when we arrived back at the MH, ready for some rest and catch up on the events of today. It was a 350 miles journey with I think was 100 miles of construction.

First stop was the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Beddack, wasn't what I really expected, but we can say we've been there. From there we continued on the trail and We saw a Moose and I had to have a picture, then on to Angie's Family Restaurant, where we enjoyed a meal of English Fish and Chips (Fries).

We continued on to Meat Cove, the farthest point in Nova Scotia. There was a village on the side of the mountain, which was very difficult to reach. Back down the mountain to the trail we stopped at a Whale Interpretive Center in Pleasant Bay. First time I realized that Whales at one time were human beings. Ha! Monkeys, now whales, whats next.

We stopped many times on the way to look at the scenery and take some pictures. We came to an early times museum in Cteichamp and saw some tools used in the early days in work with thread making cloth material and other items with the thread.

Our last stop was Joe's Scarecrows, I don't know how many he had displayed as I didn't count them and could not take pictures of all. Reminded me of the hand made wind mills we saw in Kansas.

Tomorrow we will travel to Shearbrooke and don't know it we'll have Internet or not, until then.Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-10060914256663712912010-09-13T18:08:00.000-07:002010-09-13T19:17:20.989-07:00ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Finally able to have Internet for a few days without being in a hurry. I'll fill you in from the daily log I've been keeping each day as we traveled.

NOVA SCOTIA TRIP
September 7, 2010

Day 1

We departed 2 PM stopping off in Fort Lawn, SC to get a price on remolding the bath in the motor home. We then traveled to Flying J Travel Center just outside Rock Hill for fuel and propane. Discovered that I did not put in the drop hitch on the motor home so carried the Motor home to Wal-Mart and left it while we made the return trip home to get the hitch. Arrived back at Wal-Mart at 10 PM, spent the night there.

Day 2

Travel on to Camping World in Statesville, NC to get new tires on the motor home, we got away from there at 1:30 and traveled on to Harrisonburg, VA where we again spent the night in Wal-Mart parking lot. Thank goodness for Wal-Mart they save a lot on campground fees. The old dogs are tried tonight looking forward to a good night’s rest.

Day 3

No Internet again last night I hope to get the blog posted soon. We had breakfast at McDonalds in Woodstock, VA, and then traveled on to Middletown, NY for a nights rest at Sam’s. (Wally’s Big Brother). These traveling days are rough when you’re under the weather. Sure plan on looking for a clinic tomorrow.

Day 4
Good night’s rest at least better than the night before, had to sleep in the recliner last night in order to be able to breathe. Definitely I’m going to look for that Doctor today as we travel. Breakfast guess where, at the old farmers place. Found email so I sent an update but nothing on the blogs.

Traveled to WestFord, MA for lunch at ChiIi’s and asked the waitress about an Emergency Clinic, she didn’t know one but said CVS across the street had a “Minute Clinic” so I went to see a NPA. And discovered I was sick and she gave me medicine and said if I got worse go to a clinic in Nova Scotia as they have better clinics in Canada. Tonight I feel maybe a tad better but we made it to Augusta, Maine for the night again with Wally.

Day 5
After a good night’s rest we had breakfast at Denny’s, yes one day without McDonalds. We traveled on to Saint John’s, NB arriving around 4 PM their time. (Atlantic Time Zone) Enjoyed the evening watching College Football, thank goodness for Dish on the road. Tomorrow we will arrive at the Campground in Amherst, NS which will be our home base while in Nova Scotia.

Day 6
Breakfast in the Motor Home and then to church at Edith Avenue United Baptist Church in Saint John, NB. We had lunch in the MH and continued on our journey to Amherst, NS. We stopped at McDonalds for a snack and break. We continue to NS stopping at the visitor’s Center for information to assist us during our stay here. We traveled on to Wal-Mart in Amherst for the evening. Tomorrow we will travel on to Linwood, NS where we will stay a few days and begin our tour of NS.

Day 7
We finally had the opportunity to do some touring this afternoon. We left Amherst for Linwood (not even on map) where we are staying a few days, and yes, internet.

Believe me this was a trying afternoon as we travel on what they called a road, but believe me I don’t know of any roads in South Carolina that would compare. It was suppose to be a scenic route to a fishing village which when we arrived you couldn’t tell. We continued on to the Fortress of Louisbourg, A National Historic Site. It was France’s most important stronghold and seaport (during the War of Spanish Succession) in what is now Atlantic Canada.

Well we arrived at 4:45 and the last tour was at 4:30; two and half hours to see nothing. We left disappointed but glad we didn’t get to walk the 3 hour tour. We traveled back to the Campground to be ready for tomorrow’s drive of the Cabot Trail. Probably will have to spend at least one night in a motel.

Oh I almost forgot, we took a side trip in Louisbough to Lighthouse Point, on the way out there was a fox in the road and I tried to get his picture as he sat beside the road but by the time I got the Camera ready he went off to the side and I thought in the woods, but Marianne said he just went and sat down on a rock. On the way out he was again beside the road and sat for a pose.

Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-35359486046908480802010-09-04T15:19:00.000-07:002010-09-04T15:26:15.278-07:00ON THE ROAD AGAINIt's been a while since our last posting on this web site as we have been using, www.theshepherdshands.com for our ministry in West Virginia. We are now in Dothan, AL attending my brother's daughters wedding. We will be back home Monday evening to leave out Tuesday for our adventure of Nova Scotia.

We visited Nova Scotia several years back and had just begun to tour the island when my mother had an accident and nothing would do but her son to come home. Pray that we will have a safe and enjoyable time.Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-33300562506901926162010-07-19T17:24:00.000-07:002010-07-19T17:26:22.753-07:00UP DATECheck out. www.theshepherdshands.comMayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-88299276275259882122010-04-05T01:47:00.000-07:002010-04-05T01:59:58.328-07:00DONNA'S HAVEN<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaemRgdPqdMoF2dBSQxTPQBaOhAxShUfQQNjqfE6r9fl1uQpTuWblDOH_PCjRDP5VwG64ClGwrTYVhYBQmmuvAS50LTrxoSmhXXGQAzsMDZOpv6f06L_pnQ85LjDhcUNBxcnEvgF1wpAjn/s320/100_2926.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5456573663878052866" />

Donnas Haven is the name that I gave to the ministry of Donna Martin in Danese, West Virginia. I meet Donna while filling in at the Calvary Baptist Church in Meadow Bridge, West Virginia.

Donna has been helping the people of Fayette County since the early 80’s. The schools and folks around call her expressing their needs and she reaches out to them in whatever means available. People bring her their gently used clothes and when someone calls with a need she provides or uses the telephone to find what they need.

In the beginning she used her daughter’s old play house. Later she added another portable building to assist in her ministry. We were impressed with her love of the folks and how she is ministering that we told her that we would help her in the ministry.

Back home we asked a few churches to help us with some clothing, to our surprise we were overwhelmed with what we received. But God saw the need to be much larger than what we envisioned. Donna was not able to handle all that we had carried, so we placed what we could in her garage and carried the rest to others ministries in West Virginia.

Now that is the purpose of this letter. The Lord laid on my heart to provide another building for the ministry in Danese. I want to provide a 14 X 30 portable building to go with what she already has so that she can keep on hand more clothing than she has in the past. The building will cost roughly $ 5,500 completely finished. The building will be a hull and I have already arranged for a crew to go up and finish the inside.

But I need funds to do this and I need folks to contribute to help make this a reality, would you prayerfully consider helping us in reaching our goal for the building. Any gift of any size will be greatly appreciated.

Mayhew West
412 Chapman Road
Saluda, SC 29138

For tax purposes you may make your check out to Philippi Baptist Church, West Virginia Fund.Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-27973624868712631382010-03-22T18:25:00.000-07:002010-03-23T12:29:12.099-07:00On The Road Again

We left Wednesday (3/17) for our trip to Lighthouse Baptist Mission in Ivydale, West Virginia, delivering the food and clothes that we had collected. The building was placed up for bids and the church purchased and shared the building with the school for the last year holding services in the gym. This is the first building that the church has owned since it is only a few years old. The building serves as the church and the mission ministering to the community.

We were very impressed with the volunteers who give of their time in helping others, I joined in helping put items in the grocery bags and Marianne helped give them out at the window. It’s been a very hard winter to date with over fifty inches of snow and more on the way. More jobs lost for six hundred and fifty people, those who have been bringing the needed food and clothing has been hindered not only by the weather but also the economy.

These folks in West Virginia are not able to help one another and they depend on the help from other areas. I have preached throughout my ministry that you can’t give what you don’t have. That also brings to mind how many times we spend $$$$ on something we really don’t need when we could have been blessed beyond measure by giving to another cause.

We need food items right now more than we need the clothing, but we will take both. I have contacted two churches that I have not asked previously to help this time. I’m so thankful for those of you who have supported this work in West Virginia and would appreciate any help you can give now. But the greatest need now is for can goods, paper products as well as Dollar General Cards of any amount.

Yes, these are difficult days for many people today; some whom we love dearly are suffering due to the economy. Yes all have felt the results of a strain on the budget due to inflation and the enormous utility bills due to the extreme cold. Let’s not close our eyes or turn our heads to the fact that some of our closest love ones and friends are hurting today. It’s hard enough to feel the times with the dollar not going as far as it use to, but there are those who have lost their jobs and searching with no results as of yet, then there are those who have had to take on a second job just to make ends meet giving up valuable time their family.

Let me urge you to pause for a little time to think of those around you and to prayer for those we know who are affected. I's bigger than I can handle but not bigger than God, it's in His hands.

I want to leave you with these words of the apostle John. "But whoever has the world's goods, and beholds his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth. 19 We shall know by this that we are of the truth, and shall assure our heart before Him, 20 in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 22 and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. 23 And this is His commandment that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. 24 And the one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And we know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us." 1 John 3:17-24Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-59076765598180187612010-01-22T15:45:00.000-08:002010-01-22T16:14:32.772-08:00On The Road Again

My Dad use to have a favorite expression that he used quite often, a lot of times when he would greet you he would say, how sweet it is. How true in life when things are going your way you can say how sweet it is.

This past Thursday as Marianne and I were traveling around the hills of West
Virginia headed to Little Birch Baptist Church I found myself saying, how sweet it is. Yes the thought of knowing that we were delivering more goods to the people of West Virginia brings joy to my heart. And of course that could not have been possible without many of you which I again say thank you.

It was a special privilege to meet more of God's servants whose goal is to help those in need. BeBe and Jane Marshall operate the mission work in little Birch through the Little Birch Baptist Church which brother BeBe pastors. They shared with us how God has His hand upon the ministry there and how many things are happening.

We toured the facilities where the food and clothing is distributed and the storage and sorting area. They open once a month on the third Saturday and they have over one thousand people on the list to receive food . The mission has to purchase a great deal of the food at sixteen cents a pound and those who receive the food aren't able to contribute.

It was a joy to see the dedication of BeBe and Jane and their love for the people there. So it was out with the Sporttrac and in with the Motorhome.

Traveling to Meadow Bridge, West Virginia we visited in the services at Calvary Baptist Church where I ministered six weeks early in the fall. Spending the night in the parking lot we soon heard that familiar sound of the coal train at 2 AM. Next morning in 14 degrees I unloaded some additional items for Donna Martin which William Tabor volunteered to take over to Danese that evening.

Then to Carol's Restaurant for breakfast and it was good to see Buck and Carol, neither had changed since we last saw them, catching up on the latest news in town. We then after getting some local advice on which road to take headed to our destination of Webster Springs. We arrived at 11 AM and tears came to my eyes as I saw the long lines waiting to get their weekly supply of groceries and clothes.

I called on the cell phone and Gary Melton the director came out to the road and directed where I needed to park and unload. It was indeed a problem getting the Motor home and trailer backed into the little path with all the cars. The volunteers began to help unload and when completed Gary and his wife Lily gave us a tour of the place.

We toured the warehouses attached to the mission which is an old house added on several times and then to the area where tho people were given the bag of food. Gary told me that they would give out 500 bags of groceries today which is done every Thursday. He invited us to come back and help pack the bags one Wednesday and stay over and help in giving them out the next day. Marianne says she wants us to do that some time, I think she means in warmer weather.

I asked him where he got the food and his response was God sent it. He never knew from week to week what they would have or where it would come from. He says he never asked for anything, I just pray, Father I want to thank you for the food you're going to send from the East or West, South or North and it comes. Today each bag contained A bag of dried beans, noddles, gravy, two bread cakes, and two items from the shelves behind the counter, plus a gospel track. The most amazing part is that only two people are allowed in at a time. we watched as they filed in and one person asked for a tooth bush and was given one. In the clothing room again only two people are allowed in at the time and they are given a bag when they come in and can only get a bag full.

I was so impressed with Gary and Lily and their walk of faith, Gary was a local pastor who began this operation in 1995 and is excited over what God is doing in supplying the needs of the people.

Pray for Gary and Lily Melton and Mountain Marketplace Mission and their constant needs also for the need of a new dormitory to house the teams who come to minister, the footing has already been poured, they are now waiting for $5000.00 so they can put up the walls which will all be done with volunteer labor.

I want to thank each of you my friends who have supported me in my helping the peple of West Virginia. Without Couchton Baptist Church in Aiken, Philippi Baptist Church in Johnston and Saluda Baptist Church in Saluda this would not have been possible, those gifts of clothes, Dollar General Cards and the monies have gone and long way. Most of all I thank God for His leadership in bringing in what has been needed and for showing us the places of need. I'm so excited, I can't wait to see what lies ahead.

God bless each of you.

<atomicelement id="ms__id3014"><highlighttext id="ms__id3015"></highlighttext></atomicelement>

Line for food and clothes

Volunteers handing out food

Gary MeltonMayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-92174771335279990722009-12-07T17:23:00.000-08:002009-12-08T08:50:25.974-08:00On The Road AgainWe left early Friday morning along with our friends Marshall and Beverly McGee to deliver the items we had collected for Donna's Haven in Danese, West Virginia. Knowing the possibility of snow we decided to check into the motel and deliver our good that night.

After Nine hours of traveling we arrived at our destination around 5:30 PM. Donna was so excited to see the load that we had brought for her to minister to those in need in her area. We discovered she didn't have room for all we had brought as her space was limited so we began putting it in her garage. Donna shared with us many sad stories of her ministering to the needy in the area. I was so glad that we had taken on this project. What we delivered was only about of a third as to what we had collected. God was so gracious in providing beyond our expectations as He always is.

We traveled back to the motel and then on into Beckley for a meal at Ryan's, yes there's a Ryan's in West Virginia. Back to the motel to see what the morning would bring. Expecting 2 to 4 inches every time I woke up I would look out the window to see if it was snowing. Sure enough by 5:30 I could see the white stuff on the cars. I begin loading our vehicle and before I completed it was now sticking to the parking lot. By the time we were ready to leave it was more than I wanted to see, all my plans for Saturday and Sunday was gone.

Saturday Meadow Bridge the church I supplied in September and October was having their Christmas Dinner and I was looking forward to seeing the folks again. And the new pastor was to begin Sunday morning. But that all had to be forsaken to head home.

The roads were a little bad to begin with but by the time we reached I 77 the snow plows and salt trucks were already at work. Driving was not that bad but we did see five vehicles that had slid off the side or the road, one was on it's side the wheels still turning and the head lights on.

When we were about fifty miles in Virginia the snow turned to rain and by the time we got to Charlotte the rain had stopped. We arrived home about 2:30 pm and thanked the Lord for a safe trip.

There will have to be another trip in a few weeks to take the rest back and I look forward to that maybe it won't be as fast.

I have attached a couple of pictures below for you to see the need for additional space for Donna, pray for her and the ministry she has in West Virginia.

Please note that the dates are incorrect on the pictures, hope to eliminate the dates in the future.Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-78858349173549381442009-12-02T18:41:00.000-08:002009-12-02T19:09:58.723-08:00Be Careful For What You Ask

I asked for clothes for Donna's Haven in West Virginia and, oh me of little faith. Should I say, Little is much when God is in it. what started out just to carry a pickup load of clothes has turned out to be unbelievable.

I began by asking several churches to help so that we might be able to provide clothes for the children and teens in West Virginia. Those churches, Couchton Baptist Church in Aiken, Philippi Baptist Church my last pastorate and Saluda Baptist Church in Saluda.

It started coming in slowly and we received more adults than children, so I asked for help on children's clothes. The more I picked up the more it grew, folks heard and were calling and bringing, so much that we've run out of room.

Marianne has been sorting it by summer, winter, infants, children, teens, adult men and women, thanks to those ladies that have stopped by and helped. Of course I appreciate those men who have helped me pick up and load. We have clothes every where and still coming, Tara Parkman brought twelve bags tonight and she said I can't believe this when she saw wall to wall clothes.

Depending on the weather as snow is forecast for West Virginia the next couple of days so it's a wait and see, but hopefully we will be able to go Friday with a load and another trip in several weeks.

I want to thank everyone who has made this possible for us to minister to the folks in West Virginia. We will give a detailed report when we return. I have a few pictures before the latest came in.

Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-7527350876660648182009-11-19T09:15:00.000-08:002009-11-19T09:21:35.810-08:00Help NeededA little over a week we will be headed to West Virginia with the items for the needy in that area. Your response has been very good with what we have received so far, upon sorting our the clothing we have discovered that we are short on what needed the most and that children's shoes and clothes. Talked to your neighbor's and friends and see if we can get these items. Marianne talked with Donna last night and she told her that the school called yesterday and she carried coats to the school for four children who had none. Oh how wonderful to be able to help others.Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-67758927566644103192009-11-10T19:01:00.000-08:002009-11-10T19:18:23.351-08:00On The Road AgainYes, we will be on the road again the first week in December to Meadow Bridge, WV, but this time we will be carrying items much needed by those who minister to the needy in the area. Thanks to the generosity of several churches and individuals we are collecting clothing for babies, children and adults. There is also a great need for blankets and sheets. These items must be new or in new condition as they will be distributed in time for Christmas, items are always need but especially during the winter months. We also will be taking Dollar General cards ($15) suggested for food as this is the only store in the area. If anyone reading this blog would like to help please contact us by email.Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-71803874508282149112009-10-26T08:07:00.000-07:002009-10-26T08:34:07.114-07:00Never DoneJust a little breather to fill you in on what we've been doing since our return from West Virginia. Work! Simply working to catch up on what went lacking while we were away. We left in such a hurry that we left many of our projects unfinished. Just doing what we can a little bit each day. Sad part is it's time to begin our decorating for Christmas already. But the things undone will have to wait until after the holidays.

Preston and Brenda have been here twice and they left Sunday after lunch to pack up for their return trip to Nicaragua which hopefully they will be leaving in a few days to pack up their belongs to ship to Asia their new mission assignment. They will be back for Thanksgiving as they will be receiving additional training in Richmond before going themselves. Please continue to pray for them.

Sunday we had the opportunity to preach again at Philippi in the absence of Brother Redd, such a joy to be back with our friends, what a wonderful day we had.

Until then .....Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-54157755826266859802009-10-15T18:53:00.000-07:002009-10-15T19:40:03.070-07:00McKinley Rock

I mentioned earlier that I was going to go back in the Thurmond area to view some additional sights. My neighbor's Sam and Virginia Chapman came up on Wednesday and we carried them to the New River Gorge area for some sight seeing. Don't know if I mentioned earlier or not but the New River has it's beginning at Blowing Rock, North Carolina and is one of the few rivers that run north and goes into the Ohio River which in turn goes into the Mississippi River.

After my first visit to Thurmond I was given a book by the librarian on Thurman and in that book was a picture of McKinley Rock, nothing was recorded about it just a picture, I asked the Librarian but she had never heard of it. I checked it out on the Internet and discovered some interesting information. Which made me determined to find it. No one in the church had ever heard of it, I visited the visitor's center in Thurmond and the ranger had never heard of it. The article on the Internet gave directions so I was going the next chance I had.

I want to share with you what I discovered, when the railroad was putting in the Thurmond to Minden rail line they were blasting rock off the side of the mountain and when the dust cleared one of the men looked up and said, there's the President. There in that formation of rock was the face of President McKinley. The amazing fact is that it was later that evening the President McKinley was assassinated.

As we traveled on that Thursday we stopped in at the New River Gorge visitors center and I inquired about the rock, the lady there was very helpful she showed me a photo of the rock a told me how to get there, It was on the Old Thurmond to Minden trail, I went to the trail and no one would walk with me so I set out on my own after I walked about 25 minutes and came to the spot the lady had mentioned and there it was.
I took some pictures which are below and walked a little further, but you can only see it from one direction. It would have been a better shot if the leaves were off the trees, some day I will get a better shot.

Mayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-3813590715540141332009-10-13T03:15:00.000-07:002009-10-13T03:54:04.790-07:00Home
So good to be home again, we completed our six weeks at Calvary Baptist Church in Meadow Bridge, West Virginia this past Sunday. It is good to be home with so much catching up that I do not know where to begin, guess today will be spent going through the mail as the post office was closed yesterday which would have been a good day with all the rain. Don't know how much we had but the gauge was running over from the previous two weeks. A special thanks goes out to George Deloache who watched over our place and watered our plants and flowers while we were away and to Terry Timmerman who came over and cut the grass.

It's amazing how you can fall in love with a group of people, but that's what we did at Calvary, though small in number they were a wonderful group of God's people. One couldn't ask for a sweeter spirit in such a short amount of time. It was difficult saying good bye to our new friends and we hope to see them again real soon. I want those of you who read this blog to pray that God would send them a pastor very soon, all they need is someone to love and care for them in a very special way. I know that God is going to do a good work in them.

Oh, we just had to stop by Charlotte on our way back to see the little grandson, Walker. We met our daughter Hope and Walker at the Cracker Barrel across from Carowinds for dinner. I kept putting Jelly on his biscuit and he would eat the jelly off the biscuit and hold it out for me to put more jelly on it. It's always sad to leave my little buddy, that's what I call him, "Poppa's Little Buddy."

Now is not the time to sit around, believe it or not it's time to get those Christmas decorations out and get them working. It's takes along time to get them up, but I always have those who are willing to give me a helping hand. Its the joy of the smiles and sounds of the children that make it worth it all. I hope that during the Christmas Season that you will find time to take a drive through.

May God bless each of you and give you a wonderful day.

Calvary FamilyMayhew Marianne Westhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18329945366316862853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8239407450951501757.post-91159150420099051072009-10-05T08:14:00.000-07:002009-10-07T08:00:36.218-07:00On The Road Again

This blog was to have been sent last week but I had to go back over to Thurmond to get some additional information on several of the buildings.

Here we are back in West Virginia after a brief stay at home and a conference at White Oak. What a miserable trip on Saturday as we left White Oak in the rain and drove the whole distance in sometimes a heavy rain and fog especially in the mountains. I-77 was loaded with traffic in which many were waving their banner for Virginia Tec. and others for Miami, We also encountered many rocks in the road from Princeton to Meadow Bridge, there was a car that apparently hit right outside Hinton.
Church attendance was down Sunday I guess because of the rain; you know the old saying that rain will keep the Baptist away. Not really they don’t need an excuse, just got other priorities.

Monday a group of me came over from Lexington, Ky. to complete installing the fence they started week before last. I worked with them all day and no one had to rock me to sleep,

Some have been want some pictures and I will share a few today of places that we have visited since our being here.

Thurmond, WV

A must for all to see, the year was 1873 and the completion of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad mainline. It was also the year that Captain W. D. Thurmond acquired 73 acres along the railroad a strategic for developing a town. A town without a Main Street, but had a prosperous block of businesses.
The dates on the pictures are incorrect as I did not have the date set.
The remains of the business section, note there is no road between the railroad tracks and the buildings. It was used for walking only, there is only one road that goes from the depot circling on the hill and ending about 200 yards past the last building you see in the picture above.

Thurmond Union Church, this church has been closed for years, no one knows when. What a view of the gorge below, we were told that you could see the river for seven miles. We saw many of the places we have visited in a distance, the railroads and the roads that followed the river

It’s so wonderful to see the wonders of God’s creation, what beauty. The mountains are my favorite, and we find various types of mountains all over America.

Our time is winding down here in Meadow Bridge, next week will be the end of the ministry here for the time being. I do hope to return and see how things are going soon. Please continue to pry for God to send them a very special pastor to serve here. The folks have been a blessing to us and God has allowed us once again to meet some more of His wonderful family.

Here are a few pictures from yesterday trip.
